Below are some tips on how to best care for your implants!
1) Tips on maintaining dental implants
Just as natural teeth require proper oral hygiene, you also need to take good care of installed implants.
Tips for maintaining implants:
- Use a fluoride toothpaste
- Brush teeth after every meal
- Use a good quality (soft) toothbrush and interdental brush
- Avoid sugar, and especially sugary drinks
- Use mouthwash
- Regularly change your toothbrush (every 3 months)
- Use floss in order to remove any food stuck between teeth
2) Temporary teeth – how to take care of them until permanent teeth are installed?
Temporary teeth require daily care: cut up your food before eating (e.g. do not bite into a sandwich) and maintain oral hygiene. Temporary teeth are made of a strong and resilient material that can function in the mouth for up to 6 months.
Do not forget that you have not yet received your permanent teeth, and take the best possible care of your temporary teeth.
3) I am in the middle of treatment and have received only my implant, how long can this remain this way?
If you have already received your implant, but the crown has not yet been installed, there are no strict time limits as to how long it can stay like this. The state of the implant and the length of time it can remain in the bone without being loaded with the new tooth depends mostly on the patient themselves, i.e. on their physiological processes.
It can certainly withstand up to a year, though after this time, there may be some physiological resorption on the bone due to the chewing forces. Be careful and avoid chewing on the side where the implant has been installed.
4) Implants - how to clean the stitches?
If you have stitches in your mouth, clean them with a cotton swab dipped in mouthwash (Curasept is best) or some toothpaste foam when brushing teeth (put some foam on your finger and pass gently over wound). Check with your dentist to see if you have self-absorbing stitches that will fall out on their own within a few weeks of the procedure.
5) Temporary prosthetics and implants
If you have received both implants and a temporary prosthetic, wear it as little as possible. When at home and you don’t need it, always take it out. Wear it only for aesthetic purposes when you are amongst other people.
Steps for your temporary prosthetic before bed:
- Remove the prosthetic,
- Wash it with a toothbrush and toothpaste,
- Leave it in a glass with water (when not in the mouth, the prosthetic must be in liquid),
- Once a week leave the prosthetic overnight in a glass of water with a Corega effervescent tablet for cleaning dentures.
Don’t forget: When the prosthetic is not in your mouth, it must always be in liquid.
